Top Comments of the Week

August 11, 2011

We asked, you answered. Here are the top comments from our community voting app this week.

Lindsey said” If this fits in the back pocket of jeans – perfect!!! I have been looking for something like this for years. The one I have now is falling apart and the company stopped making them. I WILL buy this as soon as you sell it.”

Thanks for the feedback, Lindsey. We don’t want you sitting lopsided, so the need for a thin, durable, card case wallets is clear. Not only are these upcycled card case wallets sleek, they’re also made by fair trade artisans using old newspapers and cleaned up plastic bags.

Nicole said: “This is insane!! I love it!!!”

Sometimes a little insanity is just what you need to liven up your wardrobe. Thanks for the enthusiasm, Nicole!

Ann said: “Do we really need to promote more alcohol? Think about the children.”

Don’t worry, Ann. If these cufflinks are accepted into our assortment, they’ll only be available in adult sizes. Since these silver-plated cufflinks feature real vintage cash register buttons, and real cash registers sometimes ring-up booze, words like whiskey,” “beer,” and “wine” grace these shiny wrist accessories.

This Just In: Book Cases

August 4, 2011

Jeffrey said: “I like the old-fashioned-ness of it and the way it appeals to nostalgia while still doing something new. I vote for Darwin — It’s like saying, Look How Far We’ve Come!”

Melissa said: “This is a clever and unique product that gives a classic look to a new, technological product.”

Emily said: “What about some Jane Austen titles?”

We asked our community to choose from a list of possible titles for these classic book-inspired e-reader covers. The feedback came rolling in, and these new community approved covers are now available. Jeffrey will be please to know Darwin’s title was a natural selection. Although Pride and Prejudice wasn’t on our original list, Emily’s suggestion caught our eye, and we’ve added it to the library.

Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales earned the most votes. Enthusiastic readers also loved Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

Our voters helped us choose the perfect titles for these handbound book cases. You too can help shape the future of UncommonGoods by voting and sharing your feedback on the new products added to our community voting app each week.

Jen said: “Of course you can find less expensive bags out there, but if your less expensive bags are anything like the ones I’ve purchased, they wear out pretty quickly. Mail bags are known for lasting for ages. I think this is an awesome bag!”

These sturdy bags are handmade from actual repurposed mail sacks. Would you rather carry the iPad Case, the Tote or both? You don’t have to send us a letter to let us know–just stop by our community voting app, cast your votes and leave your comments.

Maker Stories

Sterling Silver Birds of a Feather

July 23, 2011

Next month, we’re hosting an Uncommon Jewelry Challenge, with an open call for jewelry from designers across the US. This month we’re highlighting our favorite jewelry makers. Find out more about our design challenges and learn how you can become UncommonGoods’ next favorite jewelry or accessory designer.

Artist Rhonda Wyman has always had a “do it yourself” attitude when it comes to jewelry design. The same year she graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, she married her husband, Elijah (who she calls an indie-folk singer-songwriting superhero) and they started selling Rhonda’s pieces through the independent craft scene. Although the popularity of Rhonda’s work continues to grow over the years– her Nestling Bird Necklaces being some of UncommonGoods best selling jewelry items– she still makes each piece by hand and is always finding inspiration for bold new designs.
