Uncommon Personalities: Meet Sean Doherty

October 25, 2013
Sean Doherty | UncommonGoods
Sean Doherty, UncommonGoods Inventory and Drop Ship Manager
My hometown is…
Annapolis, MD

My favorite thing about managing Inventory & Drop Ship operations is…
I enjoy working with my teams to solve problems that impact our customers. Both ITC and Drop Ship work behind the scenes to make sure our customers have an excellent order experience. I’m very proud of the work they do each day.

I’m inspired by…
2 things: my fiancé and music.

An uncommon fact about me…
I was born in Honolulu Hawaii. Aloha!

When I’m not working I’m probably…
Throwing a multi-course dinner party for friends, playing a concert in the East Village, hitting a nasty boast on the squash court, skiing fresh powder in Colorado, or enjoying a crab feast with my family in Maryland. Yup, that’s about it.

The word that best describes me is…
Irish.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
The power of collaboration. All of the teams at UG continue to amaze me with their willingness to work together. It’s a great place to be.

Would you rather…Own every album you’ve ever loved in a mint condition vinyl collection OR get to see any musical act (still together or not, living or dead) of your choice in concert?
Seeing as my entire music catalog is stored on my Mac and IPhone, I would have to go with seeing Led Zeppelin live with Bonzo. I would ask that Robert Plant actually hit the high notes on the chorus of Over the Hills and Far Away. None of that octave lower shenanigans that he pulled in the mid Seventies. I won’t have it.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet David Anderson

October 21, 2013
David Anderson | UncommonGoods
David Anderson, UncommongGoods Inventory Transaction and Control Supervisor

My hometown is…
NYC!

My favorite process in the UncommonGoods warehouse is…
Sample Sale! Samples that our merchandising team decides not to include in our assortment are given very discounted prices and sold to our employees. They are all one of a kind and can not be found anywhere. I handle the storage, organization, and then set up of the actual sale event that we have every few months.

I’m inspired by…
Tastefully designed products, e.g., iPhone 5, Herman Miller, and things I build myself.

The best gift anyone has given me was…
Life. (Thanks Mom & Dad!)

An uncommon fact about me…
I lived in Africa, Europe, and the Bahamas before I turned 12.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Building computers, Legos, or models.

The word that best describes me…
Original!

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
The Verrazano toll really adds up…

With a pile of stuff in front of me I would build…
(You’re given glitter glue, 3 wood blocks, a yard of fabric, a spool of string, and a cardboard box filled with wire hangers.)

I would unwind all the wire hangers and then use them to make a giant wire ball. Then I would glue the blocks together. I would then use the fabric to create a parachute for the blocks using the string to tie the ends around the blocks. Then I would tie points of the parachute to the top of the ball. Using more string I could suspend the entire wire ball in the air, with blocks suspended from the fabric, which hangs from the top of the ball! Yay!

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Rebecca Paull Marshall

October 15, 2013
UncommonGoods Associate Art Director Rebecca Paull Marshall
Rebecca Paull Marshall, UncommonGoods Art Director

My hometown is…
Princeton, NJMy favorite project I’ve worked on at UncommonGoods is…
Happening right now! But it’s a secret. Shhhh.

I’m inspired by…
So much! On a daily basis though, I would be remiss not to mention Pinterest. It’s basically design crack.

I’m passionate about…
Kindness // Bicycles. They’re super fun, and environmentally friendly. Win-win. // The use of words in text messaging. No LOLs, please. // Travel. Restaurants, bars, stores, parties, hotels, countries, towns, cities you name it I want to be in it exploring. // The ocean // My family, friends, and relationship. // Mad Men! Breaking Bad! Game of Thrones! In no particular order. I’m a fair weather friend when it comes to TV.

An uncommon fact about me…
Did you know UncommonGoods employs the Dance Dance Revolution world champion? I can’t compete with that.

My favorite place to hang out in New York City is…
Sigh, R.I.P. Lakeside Lounge.

My style is…
Thankfully evolving.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
How fascinatingly beautiful the Brooklyn Army Terminal is.

Would you rather…Get a tattoo of a celebrity’s face OR relive your most embarrassing moment?
I think reliving my most embarrassing moments would remain interesting longer. Let’s just say it’s lucky that I have a sense of humor.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Bryan Balin

October 11, 2013
Bryan Balin | UncommonGoods
Bryan Balin, UncommonGoods Data Scientist

My home town is…
Riverside, IL

I’m inspired by…
People who go against the grain, and have pride and gusto in doing it (hopefully, they’re vindicated at some point…). I’m a big fan of Larry David and Winston Churchill, both of which have/had the gusto (and some say, chutzpah) to be themselves, even if it sometimes raised a few eyebrows. And, they both enjoy wearing silly hats in public. Which is cool.

My favorite food of all time is…
My Grandma’s Rocky Road pie. It’s totally manufactured, with high fructose corn syrup and plenty of Cool Whip, but it’s soooo good.

Within the next 10 years, I hope to…
Buy a condo! I’m sick of this whole “my New York City rent could pay for an entire palace in France” deal.

My guilty pleasure is…
Watching Scooby Doo.

My most humbling experience was…
My first week of college. In high school, I was at the top of my class, but when I started at Johns Hopkins I wasn’t. It really taught me that you can’t just assume success because you are smart, because there are plenty of other smart people out there. Your drive, personality, collaborative skills, and values help define success as much as your raw intelligence.

An uncommon fact about me…
I’ve been married three times, all to the same person! No, I’m no male version of Liz Taylor; I got married in Bulgaria this summer, where you have a religious and civil ceremony, and then in the U.S., because New York didn’t recognize my marriage.

Would you rather…Have a whole year to do nothing but read OR start a successful company that employed hundreds of people and produced worthwhile and helpful things for the world, but left you no time to read, ever?
Depends on what you mean by “read.” If it’s “read novels,” then it’s easy—I’d start the company! I can tear through academic papers or the Economist, but I haven’t read a novel from start to finish in years. If it’s “read interesting things”… I’d still start the company. Hopefully it’s a text-to-speech company, so the software can do the reading for me.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Valerie Baloga

October 8, 2013

UncommonGoods Customer Service Team Lead Valerie BalogaValerie Baloga, UncommonGoods Customer Service Team Lead

My hometown is…
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

The best customer interaction I’ve had at UncommonGoods was…
It’s always really fun when a customer calls expecting a fight and hangs up completely blown away by how easily their situation is resolved. One of the great things about working here is having enough freedom to really listen to what each customer needs and then being able to offer a solution that is really specific to the situation.

I’m inspired by…
Right now I find I am most inspired by people who take life into their own hands and live their dreams. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

My guilty pleasure is…
’90s pop music.

An uncommon fact about me…
Before moving to New York in 2010, I spent one summer in Upstate New York, three summers in Maine, and an entire year in Richmond, VA working in theatre. I built and painted scenery and worked on props.

My favorite place to hang out in New York City is…
Prospect Park in good weather – and at the risk of looking like a huge nerd, the library. I frequent the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and the Brooklyn Public Library.

My style is…
Casual. Comfortable. Colorful.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
I’ve learned so much, and I have acquired so many new skills – spreadsheets – they’re amazing! What I also learned, perhaps most importantly, is that some companies actually care about their customers and their employees. I’m so lucky to work for a B Corporation.

Would you rather… Tap dance OR ride your bike, in place of all of your walking?
I was all set to say bike, definitely. But then I thought, I might want to take the train sometimes, and how will I get up and down all those stairs on a bike? So I’m going to say tap dance.

4 Ways to Build a Better Business

October 8, 2013

UncommonGoods is proud to be B Corp certified as it allows us to be a part of their amazing movement and community. B Corps are certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Grasping the Ghandi quote of “Be the change you’d like to see in the world,” B Lab began the campaign B the Change, a customer-facing global movement of B Corps who are redefining success in business.

Two weeks ago, I attended the B Corp Champions Retreat in Boulder, Colorado along with team members from hundreds of fellow B Corps from around the world to celebrate our community and strengthen our global initiatives. Among the many things I took away with me from the retreat, there were four initiatives in particular that stuck in mind.

1291694_10151654870732546_708424289_o

Boulder, CO

1. Build a better community.

Building community is ingrained in what it means to truly be a B Corp. This was evident on the first day when B Lab decided to host volunteering events in order to help the Boulder community after unprecedented flooding destroyed hundreds homes and schools in the area. Understanding that it is our duty as businesses to do our part to help the community is something that B Labs expects from each and every one of their B Corps. As a business, be sure to reach out and give a hand to your local neighborhoods, schools, and venues in some shape or form whether it is through mentor programs, employee volunteering, donations, or partnerships. A well rounded business understands the importance of connecting with not only their customers, but with the outside community.

2. Become a leader in sustainability.

I was greatly inspired by the recent work done by many of the fellow B Corps that I was able to meet on the retreat. On the first day, we were lucky enough to take a tour at the New Belgium Brewing Company. In addition to being able to taste their amazing selection of beers, we learned about many of their sustainability initiatives including their investments in renewable energy, waste diversion, and their annual state-wide Tour de Fat bike ride that advocates for the biking lifestyle. I met plenty of other B Corps leaders who were passionate about being leaders in sustainability by constantly finding innovative ways to improve their businesses’ social and environmental impact. Learn more about their work at B Corp Best for the World.

3. Seek mindful collaboration.

Throughout the three days of the retreat, we broke into groups and discussed several ideas and initiatives that revolved around strengthening the credibility and exposure of the B the Change Campaign. Throughout those discussions, I met an incredible group of leaders and change makers who offered inspiration and ideas that I can take forward as we look to improve our social and environmental impact at UncommonGoods. Among the many projects that I have planned for our sustainability initiatives, I am most eager to help build community and look forward to this challenge as we continue to grow with the B the Change movement.

We’ve all heard of the saying, two heads are better than one. And this is very much true in the business world. As you build your community and speak to the locals, make sure to reach out to like-minded businesses (big or small) that would be interested to collaborate.

Making commitments to B the Change

4. Be consistent and have patience.

When making changes in your business, it’s natural to want to see immediate results. Yet sometimes, those results don’t happen overnight. It’s easy throw in the towel after a month of hard work of community outreach or trying to implement a sustainable business. Keeping your sense of motivation is just as important as seeing the end result, so remember, patience is a virtue!

Consistency and patience is something the B Corps community practices, and now there are over 830 B Corps in 27 countries from 60 industries around the world. There was quite a lot to celebrate as our community has grown significantly in just this past year. As of late July, laws have been passed in 20 U.S. states for Benefit Corporation. This is exciting for us; however, we also understand that there is still a long way to go. This is apparent in the idea that B Lab grasps of climbing mountains. This analogy was comprehensive, taking on the idea of building momentum at base camp, choosing paths, and climbing the mountain together. We understand that as the B Corp community continues to gain recognition and credibility, we must constantly learn and grow as individual businesses within the B the Change movement.
