Uncommon Personalities: Meet Kenesha Phillip

January 30, 2014
Kenesha Phillip | UncommonGoods
Kenesha Phillip, UncommonGoods Area Operations Manager

My hometown is…
St. George’s, Grenada. It’s a tiny island in the Caribbean, literally a dot on the world map.

An uncommon fact about me…
I took a year off after High School to spend time teaching underserved middle school students how to prepare for the high school. It is still one of the best experiences of my life.

Working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned…
I’ve gained some new skills, but most importantly I’ve learned to trust my instincts. Ops [Operations] can be very unpredictable. Strong instincts and a strong voice are the difference makers.

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen is…
My parents in love…

Something that always makes me laugh…
My best friend, we laugh at any and everything. Our time together is defined by dancing to Beyoncé and laughing.

My favorite process in the UncommonGoods Warehouse is…
I don’t have a favorite process. In the warehouse the sum is definitely greater than its parts.

If a magical being came down from the sky and offered me 3 wishes, I’d wish for…
1. Good health
2. More time with my grandmother
3. For all humans to recognize each other’s humanity (if that makes sense)

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me…
On theglamsavvylife.com dishing on accessible style, hair and my life.

Would you rather…Win the lottery, or live twice as long (with good health)?
Neither. As the poet Biggie Smalls says “Mo Money, Mo Problems” and living twice as long seems like a good excuse to waste time and take life for granted.

Getting to Your Intersection of Love: A 6 Step Road Map

January 23, 2014

Intersection of Love | UncommonGoods

Valentine’s Day is approaching and, as the old saying goes, love is in the air. We’re extra giddy about celebrating Saint Valentine’s holiday this year thanks to a special collection of fun new art created by our Product Development team. The Intersection of Love ™ is a way to show the world that your one-and-only has a special place in your heart.

On the other hand, Valentine’s Day can be a total bummer for those who are feeling unlucky not in love. And, since our blog team is made up of women at different points in the journey to the intersection of love, we decided to pool our experiences one night over a couple glasses of wine and share our best advice for those looking to arrive at the corner of commitment.

1. Make an itinerary for your journey. Know who you are and what you want.
Some travelers are just looking for friendship, others are looking for marriage, and some want something in between. Before hitting the road, evaluate what you really want. Look at the map of where you’ve already been to evaluate past relationships, then make a note of where you want to be, who you want to be there with you, and what you want to do to find that person.

2. Choose Your Mode of Transportation
Where will you feel comfortable meeting someone? Many people find love online these days. There’s nothing wrong with that, and although it can be scary setting up that online dating profile, once you make the decision to do it it’s a lot easier than you think!

It’s also okay to go the old-fashioned route. Get out there and attend events where you can meet people with similar interests, talk to your friends to see if they’re interested in setting you up, and don’t feel like you have to commit to the same mode of transportation for the whole ride.

3. Read the Road Signs
You’ll come across some important road signs along the way, so it’s important to be able to read those signals. Some things are easy to pick up on (your potential partner stops texting), but others are a bit more subtle. It’s impossible to tell what another person is thinking, so trust your intuition. Spending time with someone is sort of like taking driver’s ed. You’ll learn new things along the way.

4. Check Your Gas Gauge
You don’t want to run out of gas, but that can happen if you leave a lead foot on the accelerator. It’s okay to tap the brake, or even pull over for a bit if you think you’re going too fast. Keep your tank full by making conscious efforts to keep your relationship exciting. Also, take the time to really think about your relationship and if what you’re putting into it (and getting from it) is creating a mutual valuable experience.  If your tank does start to get low, it’s time to evaluate whether it’s working or if it’s just time to move on.

5. Know When to Flip on Cruise Control
So, you have a full tank of gas and you’re feeling pretty comfortable? When your relationship is in a good place, you don’t always have to stress about what’s next. When you get to this point, make time to enjoy just hanging out together (even if you don’t have big plans), get to know each other’s friends and family, and learn little things about each other you didn’t know before. Sometimes it’s fine to relax and take in the scenery.

6. Knowing When You’ve Arrived at the Intersection of Love
When you reach the intersection, you can pretty much drive with your eyes closed (though we certainly don’t recommend doing that on any actual road trip). When you’re both in the same place emotionally and have the same idea of what it means to “arrive” then it’s almost as if your GPS has announced “Destination on left.”

Disclaimer: The blog team at UncommonGoods are not relationship experts. We don’t have degrees in interpersonal psychology, and the advice in this post probably shouldn’t be taken too seriously. However, we do sincerely hope you find your way to the intersection of love!

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Rachel Goldstein

January 20, 2014
Rachel Goldstein | UncommonGoods
Rachel Goldstein, UncommonGoods Planner

My home town is…
Annapolis, MD

The word that best describes me is…
Is it not one of the most difficult questions to describe yourself in one word? If I have to….optimistic :).

My favorite thing about working in the Purchasing and Transportation department is…
My team. They are the best collaborators…and bakers…and diorama makers. Dioramans? Dioramaists? Anyway, the list goes on for the reasons why I think they’re so wonderful. (Here’s proof of Purch & Transpo’s awesome diorama skills. )

I’m inspired by…
The kindness of strangers. I live by the mantra that you don’t have to know someone to help them in whatever small or large way you can.

If I could become an expert on one thing it would be…

The inner workings of the NYC Subway!

My favorite place to hang out in New York City is…
The East River Promenade. Every time I look back at the skyline I feel so lucky to live here.

An uncommon fact about me…
Due to a year stint of intensive studying and a summer living in China, I speak a little bit of Mandarin.

Since working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
That a long commute can be made less stressful if you get to see the Brooklyn Bridge for a few minutes in the middle of the ride over the East River.

Would you rather…model every hat UncommonGoods sells for the catalog and website OR test every new UncommonGoods office item?
Can I test all of our Tabletop items instead? I love being in the kitchen! I’ll bring in a thank you present….

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Emily Dryden

January 13, 2014

Emily Dryden | UncommonGoods Photographer

Emily Dryden, UncommonGoods Senior Photographer

My hometown is…
Rockmart, GA.

I’m inspired by…
French New Wave Films.

If I could travel back in time, I’d…
Create a photo story of the same place in different times. Same street, different years.

An uncommon fact about me…
I’ve read almost every Faulkner novel written.

If I won the lottery, I’d…
Do a lot of traveling!

The cheesiest thing I’ve ever loved is/was…
The Anne of Green Gables movie series.

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
On hiatus since moving to NYC.

Working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned…
A great deal about collaborating with a great group of people.

Would you rather… Travel in space for a week, or in a submarine?
Definitely space!

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Cynthia Salim

January 6, 2014

Cynthia Salim

Cynthia Salim, UncommonGoods Outbound Warehouse Area Operations Manager
My hometown is…
Jakarta, Indonesia; Los Angeles, California; and Geneva, Switzerland. I’m a “Third Culture Kid!”

An uncommon fact about me…
I used to be a martial arts instructor and once choreographed for a stage production of Mulan.

My guilty pleasure is…
Being completely aimless on the weekends after many hours of sustained wakefulness in the warehouse.

I’m inspired by…
People who are resilient despite the odds.

My favorite process in the warehouse is…
Creating the precise, “locked-down” processes themselves. This year, I got to build the people processes and tech pieces that onboarded over 375 warehouse team members with my colleagues. Working with brilliant people to create something from scratch and refining the process as we go along is my favorite part of working here.

When I’m not working I’m probably…
Eating. The Outbound management team can attest to that.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
The elusive art of leading others–inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, developing people, providing constructive feedback, and leading a team in accomplishing complex tasks that serve team members and the company.

Would you rather… Be able to teleport anywhere at will, or be able to change any object into any other object (with the exclusion of changing things into teleporters)?

Teleport anywhere. I’d use it mostly to visit my friends in Switzerland and to get across the UG warehouse.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Paul Allison

January 2, 2014

Paul Allison | UncommonGoods

Paul Allison, UncommonGoods Quality Assurance Analyst

My hometown is…
Brooklyn, NY by way of Chicago and Boston.

I’m inspired by…
Music, kindness, and fun!

An uncommon fact about me…
I had the good fortune to travel the world and sing, and got to travel the world one last time as a competitive Magic: the Gathering Card Gamer. (Magic: the Gathering is a fantasy based card game that has been around since the ’90s that has won numerous awards, and revolutionized gaming.)

The best customer interaction I’ve had at UncommonGoods was…
I appreciate every time when I am able to allay my customers’ fears and make everything right.

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me…
I still have the gaming bug, so elbows deep in game geekery–all kinds of gaming, board games, computer games, miniatures and card games (but not the gambling kind).

Working at UncommonGoods I’ve learned…
It’s a wonderful thing to love you job again.

If I could meet anyone currently or formerly alive, it would be…
Benjamin Franklin. He is one of those people who were a pivot in the course of history. Without him the world, and the United States in particular, would be entirely different. He is an amazing figure of intelligence, creativity and diplomacy. Plus, history suggests he was just a plain groovy guy.

Would you rather… have the ability to read minds, or to tell the future?
Can’t I fly instead? To know the future would be an awful temptation to do some awfully selfish things, and a crush of responsibility to try to stop the ill of the world, while being able to read people’s thoughts is awful intrusive. But flying, just get a snuggly jacket to keep warm up there and you get to skip rush hour traffic and get a heckuva view! And maybe I could get over my fear of heights, although no doubt I would soon develop a fear of street lamps after running into a few.
