Uncommon Personalities: Meet Kat Guerrero

August 20, 2015

KatGuerrero

Kat Guerrero, UncommonGoods Planner

My hometown…
Temecula, CA. This is actually a place where the Real Housewives go on their wine vacations…. Might be why I went so far away!

I’m inspired by…
All of the wonderful things you can do with Excel.

When I was a kid, my favorite television program was…
Batman. Amazing because he is pretty much the only super hero who is still “super” without special powers. I would want to be Robin. Batman has too much responsibility and I’d rather ride a motorcycle.

If I could learn to do one thing perfectly, it would be…
Make ice cream.

My favorite place to go in New York City is…
Mikey Likes It Ice Cream, in the East Village.

In my next life, I want to come back as…
An extremely successful ice cream shop owner.

An uncommon fact about me…
I’ve met an elephant.

12 More Quotes that Keep Makers Motivated

August 14, 2015

A while back, we rounded up a series of inspirational quotes that we gathered along our adventures through artists’ studios. Those 8 Quotes that Keep Makers Motivated are enough to give most creative types a little get-up-and-go, but why stop there? We’ve since visited more studios, interviewed a ton of talented artists, and collected even more quotes that help keep our makers going strong.  Here are a few that we hope you’ll enjoy!

CassidyBrush

Considering that Cassidy Schulz Brush deals with lighting all day, it’s no surprise that she’s a fan of Edison. “There are a few quotes by Thomas Edison that I find inspirational,” she told us when we visited her Brooklyn studio. She wrote this quote out on her chalkboard wall and snapped a shot for us.

AnnaTalukder

We’re proud to feature a wide assortment of Ana Talukder’s Jewelry and our Jewelry Buyer, Sharon, was thrilled to have the opportunity to check out Ana’s studio in Seattle. Ana wrote out this mantra that reminds her, “You always have to be looking to be better, you always have to be working at being better, and you always have to put all your heart in it. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

BarryRosenthal

Photographer Barry Rosenthal happens to have a creative space in the Brooklyn Army Terminal, the same building that UncommonGoods calls home! Of course, we couldn’t wait to work with him to develop new products, but we also couldn’t wait to check out his studio. Barry explained that this Burroughs quote makes him think about his own creative process: “I don’t know what I will find in the field, and I may not know what I will do with what I find, but somehow fully formed themes are sparked just by the simple act of ‘seeing’ what is out there.”

DaveMarcoullier

Dave Marcoullier’s San Francisco woodworking studio is in a building that’s also home to the studios of more than 250 other creators, or “mad scientists,” as Dave likes to say. His quote from architect Daniel H. Burnham reminds him that he got where he is today by thinking big. “It’s good to get riled up and make bold plans,” he said.

JenPleasants

Jewelry Designer Jen Pleasants not only imprints “She believed she could, so she did” on some of her designs, she also truly believes in the power of those words. She even has them proudly displayed in her Portola Valley, CA studio.

JoAnnStratakos

Our Tabletop Buyer, NéQuana, traveled to rural Pennsylvania to meet JoAnn Stratakos, the maker of everyone’s favorite rainbow unicorn, Elwood. One of JoAnn’s favorite quotes, which was inspired by a quote from Richard Bach, is a reminder to keep the good things that could be in mind, instead of thinking about what might be holding you back.

LahlaSmart

We were lucky to get a look inside Lahla Smart’s London studio when our contributor, Emily, visited England. Lahla said that this Walt Disney quote reminds her of her early days of a designer. She took a leap, created her Food Guide Towel, and the rest is history.

StuartGardiner

On the same trip, Emily had a chance to check out Stuart Gardiner’s studio. Stuart shared a quote by Saul Bass, not only because Bass is one of his favorite designers, but also because: “it’s quite a broad and vague statement which is similar to the way I go about my work. I have a very organic unstructured approach to design: the opposite of methodical.”

MatthewHoffman

Matthew Hoffman’s work is full of inspiring quotes and words of wisdom, so it was hard to pick just one statement from our recent interview with the Chicago-based artist. We figured that “Anything is possible” pretty much says it all.

PhilThompson

Also based in Chicago, Phil Thompson creates art inspired by architecture. He keeps this Winston Churchill quote on the bulletin board in front of his drawing board to keep him motivated.

SarahGarcia

Design Challenge Winner Sarah Janece Garcia sent us a painting of her favorite quote from Coco Chanel when we interviewed her about her winning painting, First Light

RondaJSmith

We carry quite a few of Ronda J Smith’s photographic pillows, so we loved seeing her favorite quote printed and plush! “This quote means anything and everything you want it to mean,” she said when we visited her Brooklyn studio. “Your thoughts and mindset are more powerful than you could ever imagine.”

We love getting these looks inside our artists’ creative processes, and can’t wait to share more interviews and Studio Tours with through our Maker Stories. Share your favorite quotes in the comments below to get in on the conversation.

Summer on Ice – Sashee Chandran’s Iced Tea Tips

August 12, 2015

I love summer, not just because it’s travel season or light and bright into the evening, but also because it’s iced tea season! There’s nothing more enjoyable to me than grabbing my favorite iced tea blend and walking around to explore a new city on a warm summer day.

IMG_1402

When I founded Tea Drops, I wanted to make the ritual and preparation of tea easy for others without sacrificing the loose leaf tea experience. Sure, you could use a tea bag, but tea connoisseurs the world over agree that loose leaf preparation is more flavorful – some go so far as to condemn the tea bag as one of the worst inventions of the 20th century! The aim is to make loose leaf teatime easy to prepare whether  at the office, on a camping trip, or simply relaxing at home. Simply drop a Tea Drop, stir, and sip a delicious cup of tea anytime, anywhere.

But – you can also make a delicious brew served over ice! It’s incredibly easy and fun to make an iced tea blend just for yourself or to serve at your next summer bash… or infused into your favorite summer cocktail!

Reach up to iced tea heaven by following these simple steps:

1. Add a Tea Drop of your choice and 3 tbsp boiling water in a cup until the drop dissolves. Stir.

2. Add a half cup of ice to a 8-10 ounce glass. Pour the mixture over ice.

3. Fill the remainder of the glass with cold water. Enjoy!

Makes 1 serving.

Another deliciously fun idea is to mix different varieties of tea together. Blend a Citrus Ginger Tea Drop with a Sweet Peppermint Tea Drop to create the ultimate refresher, or a Sweet Peppermint with Rose Earl Grey to create a unique, delicious twist. You can put your culinary imagination to the test and create a range of creative iced tea blends.

We’ve been playing around with some delicious & refreshing mashups. Here are some of our favorite iced tea blends, all of which can be made with the teas in our Tea Drops Sampler Box.

  • Citrus Ginger & Sweet Peppermint: Ultra refreshing! Follow the steps above using these two Tea Drops.
  • Vanilla White Coconut: Follow the steps above with a Vanilla White Tea Drop and add a splash of coconut milk for a delicious, creamy treat.
  • Rose Earl Grey London Fog: After following steps 1 & 2 above with a Rose Earl Grey Tea Drop, substitute water for milk in step 3.
  • Minty Rose Earl Grey: Spruce up your Rose Earl Grey Iced Tea by mixing in a Sweet Peppermint Tea Drop. Follow the steps above using these two Tea Drops.

I’m excited to see what Iced Tea creations you’ll come up with next – there’s just so many!  Make sure to share your iced tea creation on social with #TeaDrops so that I can try your recipe too.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Ed Morales

August 12, 2015

EdwinMorales

Ed Morales – UncommonGoods Operations Associate

My hometown…
Brooklyn, NY

I’m inspired by…
Anyone with a disability. They still get up to do what they have to do like going to work, driving, exercising, living life, etc.

My favorite process in the UncommonGoods warehouse is…
Learning everything I can about the warehouse operation.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Enjoying the day off with my family and friends.

I’m stubborn about…
Nothing.

The accomplishment I’m most proud of is…
Becoming a good father and a good man.

An uncommon fact about me…
I was shot in the leg when I was fifteen. Till this day I don’t know who did it. I have the scar to remind me of that day. P.s. I wasn’t a bad kid, if you’re wondering.

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Peter Kokis

August 9, 2015

PeterKokis

Peter Kokis, Security Manager

My hometown…
Brooklyn, ahem.

I’m inspired by…
The beauty of designs found in nature; what occurs naturally is amazing, better than anything we could do.

When I was little, I dreamed of…
Dinosaurs, sharks, and robots.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
In the gym, building robots, or looking for a place to park.

The accomplishment I’m most proud of is…
Earning my wings through the military. Also, becoming a NY State Notary Public.

In other galaxies, I believe there is/are…
Spaceships heading towards Earth, their intent in question.

An uncommon fact about me…
I took a kangaroo for a walk through midtown Manhattan once (I was on tail-holding detail…that’s how you keep them from jumping).

Would you rather have the ability to read minds, or to tell the future?
Actually, I already know that in the future I will read your mind… what was the question again?

Uncommon Personalities: Meet Megan Stickel

August 8, 2015

MeganStickel
Megan Stickel, UncommonGoods Associate Buyer, Children & Desktop

My hometown…
Phillipsburg, NJ – known for having one of the oldest football rivalries in the country with neighboring Easton, PA. I never went to a single game but apparently it’s a big deal.

An uncommon fact about me…
I enjoy doing chores. Mowing the lawn has always been a favorite and I find weed whacking to be especially satisfying and fun.

My guilty pleasure is…
Having too many cats.

I’m passionate about…
Tacos.

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen is…
It’s a toss-up between the Great Ocean Road in Australia and Bjork at ACL (Austin City Limits) in 2007.

My favorite place to eat in New York City is…
Too many places! I really love this Korean place called Hangawi where you have to take your shoes off. Other favorites are Candle Café, Champs Diner, and Angelica Kitchen.

When I’m not working, I’m probably…
Obsessively cleaning my apartment. Once I finish with that, I usually like to hang out on this random stoop with my friends – sounds lame but it’s actually perfect because none of us live there, so people just come and go as they please. No commitment!

My relationship with Mother Nature is…
I love the outdoors. I grew up in a very rural area and spent a lot of time hiking in the woods, playing in streams, and riding bikes up very steep hills. I love animals and have very strong feelings on how humans use them. I think that a lot of people are beginning to open their eyes to the truths of this as well as how we treat the environment – and that’s a great thing.

If I won the lottery, I’d…
Open a massive animal sanctuary! Also, buy a bunch soft-serve ice cream machines and open a fully vegan/non-dairy mini version of something like 16 Handles.

My style is…
Mmmm, I don’t know. I’m pretty simple and just want to be comfortable and boring. Whenever I buy something that’s not basic, I end up having no clue how to wear it and it just sits in my closet. I wish I could pull more things off!

 DeliaArteaga

Delia Arteaga, Head of Recruitment

Describe yourself in 3 words.
Talkative, charming, and warm.

I’m inspired by…
People being kind to each other and animals.

My favorite thing about working in Recruiting is…
I LOVE seeing people grow into their careers and the feeling of calling someone to say ‘You got the job!!’ is extremely rewarding.

My guilty pleasures are…
My couch, Ben & Jerry’s, and Netflix.

An uncommon fact about me…
I was born in Lima, Peru but grew up speaking German.

Something that always makes me laugh…
My family – both human and animal.

Working at UncommonGoods, I’ve learned…
That leadership does not have to be intimidating, we have some incredibly down to Earth and kind leaders here.

Where did you grow up and why aren’t you there now?
My country was going through domestic terrorism and my parents wanted my sister and I to have an opportunity at a normal childhood. They gave up their careers, our home, friends, and family and started over in the US. My parents are my heroes.
