This Just In-spiration: Meet Jill McDonald

March 9, 2017

Aside from being a mama to the adorable pup above (as well as her human son, Luca), Jill McDonald is a talented designer and artist who has created works for top brands all over the country – think book covers, storefronts, bedding, puzzles, you name it. Always appreciating bright colors and bold illustrations, Jill decided to take her talents and create a studio of her own. We’re so glad she did, since now we have a few of her fun prints available in our assortment.

We like to welcome new members of our uncommon family by learning more about their stories and sharing those stories with you. Read on to hear from Jill about what inspires her, how she self-schedules in her home studio and the motivating phrase that keeps her going strong.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

I’ve known I’d be an artist since I can remember. I’ve always had crayons, paint, and a pair of scissors close by.

What was the most exciting thing about becoming a professional artist?

I love the freedom to create things that are close to my heart and then see them out in the world.

Where do you find inspiration for your bright, colorful designs?

I’m inspired by nature, I love flowers. I’m also really inspired by holidays and all the food, colors, and traditions that go along with each.

What does your typical day in the studio look like?

My husband has been my business partner for the last 13 years so we head upstairs to our 3rd-floor studio once our son is at school – around 8:30 am.

I draw or paint either digitally or by hand depending on the project until 4 pm when my son arrives back home. After that, I spend the next hour or so catching up on e-mails and updating my social media. I have Luca (my son) with me in the studio when he gets home, that way I can show him what I’m working on and we can both discuss our day.

Is there a trinket, talisman, or other inspirational object you keep near as you work? If so, what is it and what does it mean to you?

I recently painted myself a little print that says “Like a Boss.” I have it hung next to my computer. It helps me feel a little more confident when I have a tight deadline or a new contract we’re negotiating. (You know, boss stuff which doesn’t always live on my more visual, right-sided brain).

What quote or mantra keeps you motivated?

Veni, Vidi, Amavi (we came, we saw, we loved). Isn’t that what it’s all about?!?
