There’s something undeniably satisfying about uncovering a bit of buried treasure, even if that only means digging up a hunk of broken dinnerware in your backyard. Thanks to Kelly Decker, though, whose Hidden Crystal Candles are now available in three scents at UncommonGoods, you don’t even have to get your hands dirty anymore. All you need to unearth a special treat is one of her long-lasting candles made from 100% American-grown soy wax (hand-poured by the maker in California), which melt down over the course of their 5o hour burn time to reveal one of three hidden stones. Each stone has its own special meaning: rose quartz, symbolizing love; moonstone, signifying good luck; or amethyst, representing spiritual growth and healing.
Here at UncommonGoods, we like to take the time to welcome our newest makers to the fold, and Kelly is no exception. Read on to learn a bit more about what inspires her—and where she keeps her own special crystals, other than tucked inside candles, of course.
When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?
I knew from an early age I wanted to be an artist. I loved creating products by hand, and have always been interested in product development and packaging.
How did you first get your start in candle-making?
I started making candles back in 2014 as a way to incorporate two things I love: crystals and clean burning, non-toxic candles. I wanted to offer something new and unique for customers to get excited about and feel good buying.
What was the most exciting thing about becoming a professional artist?
I enjoy all of it! But if I had to pick, I would say the most exciting thing has been working with customers all over the world. I pinch myself every time I see an international email in my inbox.
What does your typical day in the studio look like?
It’s different everyday, but most days I work on product development & customer service. I truly enjoy building relationships with new and existing customers.
Is there an inspirational object you keep near you?
Yes! I am a huge believer in carrying crystals with me everywhere I go. I keep citrine in my car and hold it close in order to absorb its positive energy. I also love to keep crystals in my home, work space, and even plant them in my garden so my surroundings are always filled with positive vibes.
What quotes or mantras keep you going?
What keeps me going is my passion, but if I had to choose a quote it would be “good things come to those who hustle.” Also, not having a Plan B helps.
