I’m generally a coffee-drinker, but following a string of over-caffeinated mornings that left me shaking at my desk, I’ve been looking for a lighter replacement. Enter our new Citrus and Ginger Tea Infuser – a unique to-go bottle with exchangeable attachments that allow you to enliven your teas with tang and spice. The infuser includes:
• Steeping basket – perfect for loose leaf or bagged teas
• Reamer – get those juices flowing!
• Grater – a two-piece attachment that lets you flavor your tea while keeping the grated fibers locked away, (no floaters!)
• Bottom compartment – anything you can’t juice or shred can be chopped up and placed in here.
It’s called the Citrus and Ginger Tea Infuser Bottle, but don’t let the name limit you – a whole produce aisle of fruits, roots, and veggies awaits! I journeyed to my local grocery store and put five flavor fusions to the test.
Apple & Coconut White Tea
In the steeper: 1 pure leaf white tea bag, 1 large pinch of coconut flakes
On the grater: 1 crisp apple (I used a Pink Lady)
Coconut flakes give this tasty infusion a little tropical flair. I used sweetened coconut, and honestly, I went a little overboard on the first attempt. Next time I’ll buy unsweetened flakes, or, if I’m feeling adventurous, a whole coconut that I can crack open and grate into my tea instead.
As for the type of apple, the choice is yours. I recommend selecting something crunchy enough to use on the grating plate, and just a bit tart to balance out the sweetness of the coconut.
Carrot & Ginger Green Tea
In the steeper: 1 green tea bag
On the grater: 1 whole carrot, fresh ginger root to taste
Careful – it’s easy to get ginger-happy with this one. The infuser’s unique grater allows for a big kick of spice, while keeping the ginger root’s dense fibers from floating in your tea.
The carrot provides a light earthy and nutty flavor, but too much ginger can quickly overpower it. I only used one carrot, but you could easily go for two.
Ginger & Lime Green Tea
In the steeper: 1 green tea bag
On the grater: fresh ginger root to taste
On the reamer: ½ of one large lime
Ginger and lime – a zesty and delicious combination. As with my previous recipe, what starts as a ginger hint can quickly escalate to a ginger SMACK, so grate at your own risk.
The bold flavors in this infusion are perfect for a sleepy-morning wake up, or a mid-afternoon zing. (You can also chill your tea and add a splash of vodka for an evening elixir – I won’t tell.)
Kiwi & Lime White Tea
In the steeper: 1 pure leaf white tea bag
On the reamer/in the bottom compartment: ½ of one lime, 1 whole kiwi
Warning – this one is messy, but worth it.
Ever tried to juice a kiwi? I hadn’t. Turns out it’s more like smushing than juicing. To avoid the extra cleanup, I recommend chopping the kiwi into pieces, and placing them in the infuser’s bottom compartment. They’ll stay contained, but still give your tea a tangy dash. (Plus, you can eat the tea-soaked kiwi bits later. They’re delicious.)
Orange & Grapefruit White Tea
In the steeper: 1 pure leaf white tea bag
On the reamer: ½ of one grapefruit, ½ of one orange (I used a Cara Cara navel)
Summery, citrusy, and oh-so-tasty, this infusion would make a refreshing treat on a warm day. The grapefruit I bought was a little big for the reamer, so I recommend juicing slowly, over the sink. I’m sure a regular orange would taste just as delicious, but I couldn’t resist the lovely red color or the sweet cherry notes of the Cara Cara.
I hope this inspires you to experiment with concoctions of your own using our tea infuser. If you do, please leave your favorite recipes in the comments so that I can try them too!
