Actually, it was Voltaire who said “Common sense is not so common”. Or rather he said “Le sens commun n’est pas si commun”. Around 1765. Although he more or less lifted it from Claude Buffier (d. 1737), a Jesuit priest who rejected the Cartesian method of deductive reasoning, believing instead in the power of common sense. Voltaire thought Buffier was the only ecclesiastic who had managed to come up with a reasonable philosophical system.
